Natural Language Processing Lab (NLPL)
Introduction
NLPL is perhaps the newest research and development centre to come up in India, dedicated to the study of (and work in) language and computation. It has been started, as elsewhere, by people who are fascinated both by language and by compuation. We continue and build upon the work done in this multi-disciplinary area by all the researchers and developers in India and abroad. However, not surprisingly, we will have a special soft corner for Indian languages (including English).
Objectives
Being situated in a part of India where Natural Languge Processing (NLP) or Computational Linguistics (CL) is still something new even for those working on either language or computation, our first (modest) objective is to spread awareness about the possibilities of this area, both among the students and the faculty members. Then, of course, we will try to carry out research and development in NLP/CL to whatever extent we can.
Areas of Interest
We are open to working in anything related to language and computation, ranging from parsing to Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and from Machine Translation (MT) and Information Retrieval (IR) to Speech Processing, or even from Input Methods to Data Mining. However, we will be specially focussing on MT and IR for Indian languages (again, including English), and even more so on the development of basic language resources and tools for those languages which lack them such as most of the Indian languages.
Ongoing/Proposed Projects
1. Reference Implementation of the W3C Standards (HTML and CSS) for Indian Languages and Localization of the Resulting Application (for W3C-India, DIT, Govt. of India) 2. Treebanking for Indian Languages: All the vertical for Oriya (for DIT, Govt. of India) 3. Anusaaraka: The Only Free and Open Source MT System (NLPL is the new branch of this oldest tree of Indian NLP)
4. NLPL is also the place where the Sanchay single parent is currently working Student Projects
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. OCR for Indian Languages Games for Learning and Resource Creation Named Entity Recognition Sign Language Recognition (Isolated Words) Facilitation of Standardised Text Creation for Oriya (especially newspapers and magazines)
Future Plans
We have just started and we look forward to collaborating with academic institutions as well as the industry. We have taken out first steps in this direction. So They Say

In certain trying circumstances, urgent circumstances, desperate circumstances, profanity furnishes a relief denied even to prayer.
